Synopsis: |
This volume brings together 11 papers which relate to a seminar on language typology held at SOAS in 1988-89. The papers contain a study of the work of the Leningrad Group for the Typological Study of Languages and make some of the Group's research accessible in English translation. The highly effective cross-linguistic comparison practised at Leningrad has been a major factor in bringing language typology within the scope of modern theoretical linguistics. The essays draw examples from a number of languages and include A.A. Xolodovic on Japanese passives, Asli Goksel's "Voice" in Turkish, and B. George Hewitt on Georgian and ergativity. |
