Synopsis: |
This study in economic anthropology focuses on micro-changes in economic and social orders in Eastern Europe in the 1990s. The fall of the Soviet Union and the communist regimes of its European satellite states marked the onset of profound economic and political changes among European populations that had been battered almost continuously since the 1940s. The emerging outcomes of this collapse have not been the triumphant metaphysics of 'The End of History', but first and foremost the shattering consequences for ordinary people struggling to live their daily lives. The responses of societies to extreme conditions are best learned through the mundane activities of people buffeted by the circumstances and recrafting their lives in concert. These responses are not learned best through the summations or quick takes that journalists and the mass media specialize in, but through the patient collection of qualitative data over lengthy periods informed, substantively, reflectively, by the analytical senses of the social sciences. |
