Synopsis: |
This book critically considers the current trend to global interactivity in the area of higher education and asks the question: who is all this mobility meant to profit? Drawing a distinction between educational effectiveness and educational efficiency, it argues strongly that the focus on student learning ought not to be lost in the international progression towards corporate universities. This study considers the impact on higher education of a number of the most influential drivers of globalisation, including internationalization, corporatisation, massification and diversification and argues that the sector plays an important part in progressing them within its own sphere as well as generally around the globe. Universities are often active agents in globalisation. It argues that at the heart of international higher education is learning and that students are entitled to receive what they pay for. International mobility of academic staff has no real regulation as yet - no one can be sure of the effectiveness and efficiency of individual teachers as they move from one context to another. What effect does that have on students?Should they simply accept what is on offer or do universities have an ethical obligation to ensure that whoever they employ to teach can do the job? |
