Synopsis: |
Through the application of phenomenological semantics, this text offers a new approach towards understanding modal logic and its philosophical implications. It is directed primarily to phenomenologists, but also addresses analytic philosophers and philosophically interested logicians. Over a century ago, mathematics and logic developed into abstract disciplines. This process eventually led to their unification, which Husserl termed "Mathesis Universalis". The Mathesis Universalis was not only the source of Husserl's own philosophical work, but also is the context within which modern modal logic ought to be understood. The phenomenological explication of modal logic, considered as an abstract discipline of the Mathesis Universalis, requires detailed analyses of the genesis of modalization that extend deep into the cognitive structures of prelinguistic perception. This phenomenological understanding of modalization offers two advantages. Firstly, the serious difficulties facing modal logic in the fields of epistemology and ontology, especially as put forward in the framework of analytic philosophy, can be resolved. |
