Synopsis: |
It's widely acknowledged that a high proportion of consultations in primary care are of an orthopaedic nature. With an aging population the emphasis on musculoskeletal complaints looks set to increase. In contrast, orthopaedics seems to be one of those specialties that does not feature largely in GP vocational training programmes. For this reason, a lot of GPs may find themselves falling back on experiences gained during an orthopaedic attachment at medical school. This book seeks to discuss these issues and those orthopaedic problems, both paediatric and adult, which are frequently seen by GPs. This book originated from a series of articles written by Steven Cutts and Alison Edwards for GP magazine and the text has been updated and expanded upon to ensure a primary care focus. Each chapters covers a major anatomical region and details the: Background, history and clinical features Risk factors Investigations Surgical and medical treatment options, and associated risks Future surgical possibilities for orthopaedic conditions encountered in clinical practice. This book is illustrated with pictures taken in orthopaedic outpatient clinics and operating theatres throughout the UK.We hope that GPs will find this book to be of practical value and a handy reference for future consultations. This textbook is intended for Primary Care practitioners, especially those with an interest in orthopaedics and will form an invaluable learning aid for GP registrars. |
