Synopsis: |
"Songs of English and Scottish Travellers and Gypsies 1965 - 2005" is compiled by Mike Yates. The Foreward is by Norma Waterson. "Traveller's Joy" is first and foremost a songbook - a collection of over fifty songs to be learned, sung, and enjoyed by the reader. The intention is to portray the singers and their music with honesty and sensitivity. To enhance and complement the texts and musical transcriptions, an accompanying 20 track-CD allows the reader to hear some of the performers themselves. In addition, there is an authoritative introductory essay by Mike Yates, along with biographical sketches of the singers, notes on the songs, photographs of the singers and of travelling life, and a bibliography and discography. A CD accompanies the book. The title includes "At the Atchin Tan" by Mary Ann Haynes; "The Broomdasher" by Levi Smith; "The Creel" by Duncan Williamson; "Bold Keeper" by Harry Brazil; "The Bonny Wee Irish Boy" by Sheila MacGregor; "Barbara Allen" by Debbie and Pennie Davis; "The Canty Auld Wife" by Sheila MacGregor; "The Female Drummer" by Mary Ann Haynes; "The Cruel Grave" by Duncan Williamson; "Green Bushes" by Phoebe Smith; "The Oakham Poachers" by Wiggy Smith; "The Shamrock Shore" by Mary Ann Haynes; "The Donside Lover (Drummallochie)" by Sheila MacGregor; "I'm A Girl Who's Done Wrong" by Mary Ann Haynes; "The Laird O' Drum" by Duncan Williamson; "The Lily-White Hand" by Mary Ann Haynes; "The Maid of Kilmore" by Sheila MacGregor; "The Widow's Moor (The Widow and the Devil)" by Duncan Williamson; "Sweet William" by Phoebe Smith; and, "Closing Our Camping Grounds Down" by Duncan Williamson. |
