Synopsis: |
This work is a reissue of the biography of the County Tyrone writer William Carleton (1794-1869), originally published in 1947. A novelist and short story writer, Carleton shares his birth place with Benedict Kiely and Flann O'Brien. In Carleton, Kiely saw the making of modern Ireland. Kiely writes of the man and the writer, reflecting what life was like just before and after the Famine. Although he lived and worked in Dublin, Carleton is best remembered for his evocation of the way of life he experienced in his early days in the Clogher Valley. He portrayed the people, and his own neighbours at Prolusk, Towney and Springtown. His most celebrated book remains his collection of tales published in 1830 and 1833, "Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry". |
