Synopsis: Across the global north, governments have undertaken extensive economic restructuring of disability social provisioning measures arguing that many people who are in receipt of such benefits are no longer disabled or were incorrectly assessed as being eligible. This has occurred while governments have simultaneously signed and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Thus, a global contradictory trend has emerged; governments purport to ascend to disability rights realisation whilst retreating from the very measures that ensure disability rights realisation. For many people within the Global North, the retrenchment of social provisioning measures that are pivotal to disability rights realisation has been in direct response to the 2008 global fiscal crises and the discursive privileging of austerity policies. As a reaction, disability movement actors within Northern states have targeted a host of actions and mobilisations against such reforms with heightened activism, contention and resistance.Drawing upon ten years of in-depth empirical research this book reveals that many of these processes of disability re-imagining were well-established prior to the crisis and hegemonic discourses of austerity. Rather than position austerity as a new discourse, Soldatic shows that austerity is the continuum of neoliberal restructuring that has been re-regulating disability since the early 1970s. Thus disability has become a central category of socio-political economic concern with the global emergence of neoliberalism as policy hegemony.
