| Synopsis: |
This is the first work in English covering Ranke's life, work and understanding of history. The book is a synthesis and will be an important volume for future historians and students. It examines over 35 different works and articles. Only by including all of these into the assessment of Ranke as an historian a different and much more complex picture of the historian and personality of Ranke will evolve. The monograph will reassess Leopold von Rankes life, work and understanding of history. Much has been published over the past 120 years, however full assessments and biographies were only published in German in 1893 (Guglia) and in 1921 (Helmolt). A new assessment and synthesis of information is therefore needed. The book will include a new and general overview of his life, a complete summary of all of his publications and an assessment of several different aspects on his writing and understanding of history, such as his philosophy of history, the role of the historian, how Ranke composed his works and how he viewed topics such as nationhood and religion.Whereas in previous works on Ranke only a few works were reviewed (most famously the History of the Popes, English History, Universal History, his article 'The Great Powers' and his first work The History of the Latin and Teutonic peoples) this assessment can include all publications of Ranke which amounts to over 35 different works (some are several volumes long) and articles.Only by including all of these into the assessment of Ranke as an historian a different and much more complex picture of the historian and personality of Ranke will evolve. |
