Synopsis: |
This is a passionate memoir about alienation, displacement, and the conflicting emotions of a Jewish man at odds with Israel's Nationalist fervor. When Daniel Cil Brecher, the son of Austrian Holocaust survivors, grew up in postwar Germany, he was uncomfortable straddling the divide between Jews and other Germans. After a move to Israel, part of his search for personal and political fulfillment, his joins the reserves, where his position in the army education corps requires that he lecture troops on Israeli history and policy. His exposure to the propaganda machine, the invasion of Lebanon, and other ideological struggles inspire a loss of faith in an adopted homeland that can never really be his. Brecher's memoir is a personal story that explores the sharp edges of Jewish identity; it will resonate with anybody who has tried to carve a home out of an unforgiving landscape. |
