Synopsis: Many areas of the world are currently experiencing severe droughts that result in potable water shortages. In the United States, the extreme prolonged drought conditions in states such as California and Texas have resulted in historical record water deficits. For inland communities, new water resources are now being evaluated, including the use of reclaimed water for potable reuse. However, reclaimed water routinely contains conventional and emerging chemical and microbial contaminants, and some must be removed prior to reuse in order to ensure safe, potable water. Potable reuse is typically achieved through multi-barrier treatment trains consisting of multiple technologies such as microfiltration, reverse osmosis (RO), advanced oxidation, or granular activated carbon (GAC). For indirect potable reuse, an environmental buffer such as managed aquifer recharge is also required, but not for direct potable reuse (DPR). To ensure efficacy of treatment, water quality must be evaluated in real time to verify that the barriers are operating as designed and also reassure communities that there are no adverse public health hazards from utilizing reclaimed water for potable reuse. The goal of this project was to evaluate the ability of on-line sensors to ensure that advanced treatment of reclaimed water prior to potable reuse eliminated all chemical and microbial contaminants. Specifically we wished to determine if real-time sensors could be used for process control of advanced treatment to ensure the safety of potable water for the community.
