Description: The importance of Crowland as a town in late Saxon and medieval times has been overlooked. Attention has focused on the abbey, mistakenly thought to have been founded in 716, but in reality in the tenth century. The account substantially changes our view of the history of the fens south of The Wash.
Synopsis: This fascinating book is the only systematic historical account of Crowland, a small fenland town in south Lincolnshire. It tells the story of the town and its inhabitants from the time of its foundation to the present day: showing its inseparable relationship with its abbey, founded in the tenth century: its thirteenth and fourteenth century wool economy; and also the importance of the town's intimate relationship with water - both for its opportunity for transport and for the problems that the peat fens in general could cause. Through his meticulous research, Michael Chisholm, an eminent economic geographer and previously professor at Cambridge University, unravels the history for us, and the role played in it by the natural environment. When entrenched beliefs are confronted with evidence, the fog of mythology clears, yielding much that will surprise some readers and throw light on historical matters with a far wider significance than Crowland itself. This is an enlightening and enthralling book, full of surprises, that is destined to become a classic among local historians.
