Synopsis: This book provides a personal and honest account of my VSO placement in Indonesia. I am only one of many historical and present volunteers who take time out from the normal rat race of western life to assist individuals and/or groups in far flung places who are far less fortunate than us. The detail given in this book provides a daily insight in adapting to a new environment, language, food, culture, working practices and traditions sometimes considerably different to our own. My particular placement remit entailed assisting management and staff in a relatively new NGO on the subject of capacity building in secure livelihoods for rural communities. In reality it encompassed considerably more and a willingness to be patient and adaptable! Emotions encountered during placement varied from full on frustration and elation to a liberal sprinkling of humour, not withstanding a number of painful health episodes. Come time to leave my placement I can safely say that it has been a life changing experience and a future of unforgettable memories. The placement was rewarding in an emotional and professional sense and I returned home having acquired a host of new friends from different backgrounds and nationalities.
