Synopsis: |
This volume presents diverse conceptual, archaeological and ethnoarchaeological perspectives on agriculture, with a focus on its origins, early development and spread in different regions of the world. A broad range of perspectives on agriculture are opened up for debate including alternative conceptions developed during the investigation of contemporary, as well as past, practices. Multiple lines of evidence of early and potentially independent agricultural development are presented for areas often considered peripheral to traditional centres of 'agricultural origins'. Research from additional regions across the globe highlights the diversity of concepts used to think about agriculture and the diversity of agricultural practices in the past and present. Regions represented in the volume include parts of North, South and Central America, SubSaharan Africa, India, Indo-Malaysia, Melanesia and the Pacific. |
