Over the past four decades, film and video have played an increasingly important role in contemporary art. For the first time, a single volume traces the history of artists' involvement with the moving image, from the earliest experiments with film to the latest digital and video streaming techniques over the Internet. "Film and Video Art" takes in all the major developments in the unfolding dialogue between artists and moving image media. Among the works examined are films by the Lumiere Brothers from the late nineteenth century; films associated with art movements including Surrealism, Dada, Russian Constructivism and Pop Art; the advent of video; the arrival of the moving image in the gallery; the prominence of documentary in recent contemporary art; the advent of the major-budget art film; and the emergence of net art and video streaming.
