This book aims to bring together in a clear and accessible way the relevant research with the best of international scholarship to provide a comprehensive approach to the study of crime in Ireland. It will offer a wide-ranging account of the means through which we can understand crime as a social phenomenon and from which we can proceed to deal with it as a policy issue. It will do this through a consideration of the full range of concerns around crime, from the amount and type of crime that goes on here through to issues of policing, punishment and policy. This is a new edition of "Crime in Ireland: A Sociological Introduction", published in 1996. It is designed to take account of recent changes, most notably in the patterns of crime, in the dominance of drug-related crime as the focus of public attention and linked to that concerns about the activities of organised criminals, in the rising concerns about juvenile offending, in the growing demands for more punishment of offenders, in the increasing role given to victims in crime debates and policy changes, and in the increasing prevalence of a criminalisation model as the preferred means of responding to undesired behaviour.It will bring in recent innovations in the ways in which crime is understood by sociologists and criminologists, ranging from the work of new realists in the United States, through the globalisation of crime and the globalisation of responses to crime as in the degree of policy transference now going on whether this is zero tolerance or restorative justice, to the implications of human rights legislation for policing and punishment. As with the first edition it is intended to be an open and accessible text and will not assume or require a prior understanding of criminology or sociology. |
