Synopsis: |
The port of Le Havre played a key role in the development of impressionist painting. This book is the catalogue of an exhibition of paintings from Le Havre, with works by Monet, Sisley and Pissarro, Dufy and Marquet, together with a substantial group of paintings and sketches by Boudin. It was in Le Havre that Monet painted "Impression: Sunrise", the work that gave the movement its name. Many other artists of the period were associated with the town, from Monet's teacher Boudin to the colourful and exuberant favourite of a younger generation, Dufy. The volume includes essays on the history of the collection by Francoise Cohen, and on the artistic response to the port by John House. The book features many unfamiliar works newly restored and reproduced for the first time in colour. |
