Description: Examines comparative international experience on local economic development planning and suggests how it may be applied in South Africa in order to alleviate urban poverty. Chapter themes include: urban poverty in South Africa; and economic initiatives in Durban and on the central Witwatersrand.
Synopsis: Local economic development planning is now being introduced to South Africa. It consists of co-operative efforts among communities, local governments and private sector bodies with a view to: mobilizing resources - public, private and community-based - for development purposes; expanding employment opportunities; and improving the supply of services and amenities. This book examines comparative international experience on local economic development planning and suggests how it may be applied in South Africa in order to alleviate urban poverty. Local economic development is advocated by the African National Congress and is therefore likely to constitute a central activity of civic associations. This book also reflects on this aspect of ANC policy and on the viability of civil society. Chapter themes include: urban poverty in South Africa; economic initiatives in Durban and on the central Witwatersrand; suggestions on the restructuring of the form of the apartheid city with a view to promoting development; and a detailed examination of civil society.
