Synopsis: |
This is the accompanying Teacher's Pack to an illustrated story book which explores the issue of deportation from a child's perspective. It shows that children can influence events, and that support networks, such as friends, families and communities, are vitally important and powerful. An envelope drops through the letter box of the Okolo family in Manchester. But it isn't anybody's birthday. Instead, that letter turns the lives of Awele, 8, and Anwuli, 5, upside down. It's from the government, telling the Okolo family they are going to be deported back to Nigeria. Through the eyes of Anwuli, "A Fight to Belong" tells the moving story of the family's four-year campaign to stay in England - with school friends, teachers and parents writing letters, singing, marching and signing petitions in support of the family. |
