Synopsis: |
Small wastewater treatment plants (SWWTPs) are crucial to water quality management. In many countries a far greater proportion of wastewater is treated in small systems than in large plants. In rural areas they purify municipal sewerage. They have a key role in industrial wastewater treatment. Perhaps their greatest potential lies in unsewered urban areas where compact and efficient plants can be constructed promptly and economically to provide sanitation to clusters of dwellings. Thus small plants must satisfy diverse needs and be integrated into infrastructures at different stages of development and sophistication. They must be reliable, easy to operate, and tolerant of variations in the influent: a difficult task, needing an interdisciplinary approach that takes account of local conditions. The SWWTP IV Conference enabled practitioners and researchers to examine the technologies that treat wastewater from small communities and industrial enterprises. Thirty-five papers have been selected for these proceedings. After general overviews and studies of the situation in specific regions, papers examine applications of natural treatment processes, sequencing batch reactors, biofilm reactors, and membrane technologies, before focusing on specific treatment problems. Together they provide an essential summary of the state of the art in small wastewater treatment plants. |
