Synopsis: |
This is a record of events as seen through the eyes of someone who was born in the early thirties of the 20th Century, and has managed to survive up until the early part of the 21st century, in spite of fierce opposition from friends, enemies and neighbours. It notes (but not too seriously) some of the trails we went through as children and a few of the many changes that occurred within that short space of time. It shows some of my life (not all of it hopefully) from academic ineptitude through to the present day's acute foolishness which can now be attributed to moments of creeping senility and for which I can no longer be made accountable. It misses out the service performed in the duty of my country and Queen, possibly the most tiresome and the least sensational piece of history anyone has ever written about, so I decided not to write about it. My greatest distinction in Queenie's service occurred when I was in Bahrain when I gave one pint of blood, for which I received a pair of cufflinks with 'blood donor' written on them in Abrabic.I had a choice of that or thirty rupees, but my 'mate' (another Bennett, also from Norwich and a former school friend) who went in first said, with the sincerity and piety of a Pontiff, 'if you think it right to sell blood it's up to you.' So suddenly, overcome with a great spirit of rightousness and decency and by passing my basic instinct of greed, I took the cufflinks. When I told him of my monumental sacrifice he, with tremendous satisfaction, flashed his thirty rupees taking the trouble to make it known that my gullibility was alive and still operating on all cylinders. This is my first and possibly my only attempt at writing anything, apart from apologies for some incompetence I've displayed after imbibing a dram too much and being reminded of it later. Although I have, on odd occasion and ignoring wisdom, felt it necessary to put the world to rights in letters through the columns of the local press, which they in their wisdom have at times refused to print. This they explain was due more to the laws of libel rather than the work itself, although they did mention that even that many have had something to do with their reluctance to print. |
