Die Autoren uberprufen diese Position kritisch unter der Fragestellung, ob die freie Rede den rhetorischen und theologischen Anforderungen an eine Predigt tatsachlich gerecht wird. Denn die freie Kanzelrede ist von der Gefahr bedroht, zu einer Art smalltalk mit der Gemeinde zu werden. Aber auch das schlichte Vorlesen eines Predigtmanuskripts ist nicht empfehlenswert. Denn die Predigt erfordert rhetorisches Engagement: Ohne Kontaktaufnahme zu den Zuhorern kann niemand deren Aufmerksamkeit wecken.
