Description: This study examines the theory that cardiovascular disease results from identifiable intrinsic or environmental influences. Excluding the risk factors of cigarette smoking, it explores such influences as age, sex, diet, obesity, lack of exercise, stress and exposure to carbon monoxide.
Synopsis: This volume examines the idea that cardiovascular disease results from identifiable intrinsic or environmental influences. By excluding the well established adverse effects of cigarette smoking, adequate consideration can be given to the risk factors for cardiovascular disease in non-smokers, who are now in the majority in most western countries. The possible risk factors for cardiovascular disease in general, and coronary thrombosis in particular, are identified by expert authors, who review what is now known and the validity of the evidence. The first category of factors considered are those intrinsic to the individual such as age, sex, family susceptibility and hypertension. The second category of factors comprise such environmental influences as diet, obesity, lack of exercise, stress at work, and exposure to carbon monoxide, lead or environmental tobacco smoke. Although epidemiology is important in the evaluation of these environmental risk factors, it is not especially suited to the task. The weakness of the evidence is highlighted in this book, which consequently is of direct importance for all physicians, health educationalists and advisors.
