Box set containing six films featuring Charlie Chan (Warner Oland). In 'Charlie Chan In Paris' (1935), Charlie's (Oland) visit to Paris, ostensibly a vacation, is really a mission to investigate a bond forgery racket. But his agent, apache dancer Nardi (Dorothy Appleby) is killed before she can tell him much. The case, complicated by a false murder accusation for banker's daughter Yvette (Mary Brian), climaxes with a strange journey through the Paris sewers. In 'Charlie Chan In London' (1934), Charlie finds himself in England and accepts a case where he has to find a murderer in 65 hours to save an innocent man from the gallows. The action takes place in a wealthy country home where there is more than one dead body, the obligatory assault on Chan himself, misleading clues and the ever present reminder that time is passing. In 'Charlie Chan at the Circus' (1936), while ostensibly on vacation with his wife and twelve children, Charlie visits a circus at just the right time to become involved in the murder of one of the circus owners. Charlie is prevailed upon to travel with the circus in hopes of discovering the killer before he, she - or it - strikes again. In 'Charlie Chan On Broadway' (1937), a New York nightclub singer plans to reveal gangsters named in her private diary. However, the diary disappears and the singer is murdered. Charlie Chan is called into to investigate. In 'Charlie Chan In Shanghai' (1935), the Chinese government calls Charlie Chan to Shanghai to investigate a murder involving an opium ring. Ring leaders kidnap Charlie and attempt to have him killed. Finally, 'Charlie Chan at the Opera' (1936) is regarded by many as the best of the Charlie Chan series. The opera star Gravelle (Boris Karloff) suffers amnesia. He is a recent escapee from an insane asylum, accused of murdering fellow performers (his wife and her lover). Included in the movie is the opera 'Carnival', composed for the picture by Oscar Levant. |
