Description: |
Triple bill of of films which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's drama '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' (2007), the story takes place over the course of one day in 1987. When college student Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) falls pregnant, her kind-hearted friend, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), helps her to get an abortion from the shady Mr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov). In Ceaucescu's totalitarian Romania, at this time, abortion and contraception are both illegal. The film follows Otilia's attempts to help her friend, despite the terrible obstacles in her path and the fact that Gabita hasn't been totally honest with her. It is an unflinching portrait of hard times in a harsh regime, yet Otilia's compassion and humanity shine through. The black comedy 'Underground' (1995) is the tale of two likeable crooks, manipulative Marko (Miki Manojlovic) and loveable Blacky (Lazar Ristovski), and the woman they both love, Natalija (Mirjana Jokovic). When WWII arrives, the trio seek refuge in an undergound shelter with the rest of the townsfolk. Years later, when the war finally ends, they manage to trick the others into believing that the war is still going on. Finally, in 'The Child' (2005), Bruno (Jeremie Renier) is a young petty thief who has fathered a baby by his 18-year-old girlfriend Sonia (Deborah Francois). Needing money, Bruno commits a shocking atrocity, and its repercussions force him into a desperate search for atonement. |
