Polish director Wojciech Has's epic adaptation of Jan Potocki's 19th-century gothic novel has become a cult classic since its making in 1965, and has since been cited as a major inspiration by filmmakers including Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Luis Bunuel and David Lynch. A stylistic masterpiece, the film is essentially a confoundingly labyrinthine set of stories-within-stories, told primarily through the bizarre experiences of young Spanish captain Alfonse van Worden (Zbigniew Cybulski) as he travels to Madrid through the haunted Sierra Morena mountains during the Napoleonic wars. |
