When petty thief Raj (Raj Kapoor) meets his childhood friend Rita (Nargis) for the first time after many years apart, he is surprised to mind that she has taken an opposite career path to him and become a lawyer. The two soon find themselves in love, but tragedy threatens when Raj steals a necklace from the unforgiving Judge Raghunath (Prithviraj Kapoor) in order to give to Rita on her birthday.
