Description: |
Part of the American Film Theatre Collection, in which classic American stage plays are transferred to the big screen, this Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Edward Albee is directed for cinema by Tony Richardson. Katherine Hepburn and Paul Scofield play Agnes and Tobias, a middle-aged couple with a quiet, tranquil life which is interrupted by visits from Agnes's alcoholic sister Claire (Kate Reid), their daughter Julia (Lee Remick) who has just run away from her fourth failed marriage, and their best friends Harry and Edna (Joseph Cotten and Betsy Blair) who arrive seeking refuge from some unknown terror - and threaten to stay permanently. Subtly, and with a dark air of tragi-comedy, the couple's 'delicate balance' breaks down, until their peaceful domestic equilibrium is shattered forever.. |
