Description: |
Triple bill of television dramas based on the novels by Maeve Binchy. In 'The Lilac Bus' (1990) Con O'Neill plays Tom, a bus driver who drives his lilac-coloured bus from Dublin to Rathdoon every Friday evening. Taking a ride are five passengers who have all reached crossroads in their lives: Judy (Stephanie Beacham), who works in a health food shop, Dee (Beatie Edney), a law student, Nancy (Rynagh O'Grady), with a reputation for meaness, Celia (Dervla Kirwan), a nurse, and Mikey (Brendan Conroy), a bank porter. In 'Anner House' (2007), after Irishman Neil Barry (Liam Cunningham) gets divorced from his wife and loses custody of his children, he decides to leave Ireland and move to Cape Town. There, he meets another Irish woman, Ruth Maguire (Flora Montgomery), who is also attempting to extricate herself from an unhappy relationship. Together, the pair embark on a journey of self-healing and personal discovery, culminating in them opening a boutique hotel which they name Anner House. In 'Echoes' (1988), in the 1950s town of Castlebay, Ireland, young student Clare O'Brien (Siobhan Garahy) dreams of going to University, but is constantly hampered by her narrow-minded mother Agnes. With the encouragement of local teacher Angela O'Hara (Geraldine James), Clare eventually leaves to study in Dublin, where she begins a romance with fellow student David Power (Robert Hines). However, David has a rival for Clare's love in the unwholesome form of Gerry Doyle (Stephen Holland). Back at home, Angela faces censure from the town gossips over her relationship with a recovering alcoholic. |
