Description: |
Triple bill of chillers from the 1990s. In 'Kalifornia' (1993), a writer (David Duchovny) and his photographer girlfriend leave New York to drive to a new life in California, taking in several Southern States so that they can visit murder sites for their new book on serial killers. Along the way they pick up two hitchhikers, one of whom (Brad Pitt) could provide an interesting case study for their research... Juliette Lewis also co-stars. In 'Misery' (1990), novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is sick of his 19th Century romantic heroine, Misery Chastain, so he decides to kill her off and writes a more personal, modern novel. When his car crashes in remote mountains he is saved by 'number one fan' Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who adores Misery and has even named her pig after her. As she nurses him back to health at her remote dwelling, he realises she is not just going to let him go... 'Shallow Grave' (1994), a gory thriller set in Edinburgh, is produced by the team responsible for 'Trainspotting'. Three yuppie flatmates (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston and Ewan McGregor) advertise for a fourth person to join them in their swanky apartment. They end up with a mysterious man who promptly dies in his bed of a drug overdose, leaving a million pounds cash in a suitcase under his bed. The greedy threesome then agree to dispose of the body and keep the loot. However, this means cutting off the hands and feet of the body, smashing the teeth, and finally burying it in the woods. They also ignore the rightful owners of the money, remaining unaware that those owners are, along with the police, hot on their trail. |
