Description: |
Horror triple bill. 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2' (1986) is the second instalment of Tobe Hooper's notorious saga about the inappropriate use of power tools in the Lone Star state. This time around the action focuses on Texas Ranger Lofty Enright (Dennis Hopper), a man obsessed with finding the lunatic murderers of his brother's kids. When he hears that DJ Vantia Block (Caroline Williams) has a recording of a chainsaw attack made when Leatherface and his pals descended upon a caller during a radio phone-in, he tries to persuade her to use the recording to lure the killers out into the open. She agrees - but neither DJ nor Ranger are quite prepared for the madness they are about to encounter. Patricia Arquette stars in 'Stigmata' (1999) as Pittsburgh hairdresser Frankie Paige - who, when it comes to God, is a firm non-believer. However, after receiving a gift of some rosary beads, Frankie begins suffering from stigmata - bleeding wounds on her hands correlating with those suffered by Christ on the cross. Father Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne) is sent to investigate by the Vatican, and although initially dismissive, gradually begins to realise that Frankie is carrying an important message for mankind. However, Kiernan's corrupt superior, Cardinal Houseman (Jonathan Pryce), wants Frankie's message stopped - and is prepared to resort to murder to achieve his aims. Brian De Palma's breakthrough psycho-sexual horror yarn 'Carrie' (1976) is adapted from the novel by Stephen King. Carrie (Sissy Spacek) is a gawky, unloved teenager whose awakening sexuality is at odds with her puritanical mother's fanatical teachings. Physically abused at home and shunned at school, an unexpected Prom invitation seems to be Carrie's first chance at happiness. But when the Prom night ends in a vicious practical joke, Carrie's despair manifests itself in a fiery telekinetic revenge. |
