| Description: |
Collection of five popular gangster movies. In 'Scarface' (1983), up-and-coming gangster Tony Montana (Al Pacino) arrives in Miami as a Cuban refugee. With his friend Manny (Stephen Bauer), Tony carries out a hit on a politician, earning him the gratitude of drug dealer Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). Tony rises rapidly in the 'organisation' but courts disaster when he becomes involved with Lopez's cocaine-addicted wife, Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer). In 'Taxi Driver' (1976), a film that doesn't really fall into the gangster genre, Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works as a New York City taxi driver who's consumed with disgust by the 'filth' which surrounds him. His explosive, psychotic loathing eventually drives him to make an attempt on the life of a politician. When his plan fails, he turns his attention to saving a child prostitute (Jodie Foster) from the clutches of her pimp. 'Casino' (1995) stars De Niro as Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, the mob's frontman for a billion dollar Las Vegas casino. The story begins in 1973 when Ace falls for hooker Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone), while boyhood companion Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) is appointed as his muscle at the club. Over the years various jealousies surface and erupt in a series of violent betrayals and, ultimately, the destruction of Rothstein's empire. In 'Donnie Brasco' (1997), it's late 1970s New York and FBI agent Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) has to go undercover to infiltrate the Mafia as 'Donnie Brasco'. He befriends ageing hitman Lefty Ruggerio (Pacino) who inducts him into the ways of the Mob. As Brasco, Pistone becomes immersed in the Mafia world of violence, but at the same time comes to regard Lefty as a friend. He knows that when his assignment is over and his cover is blown, it will mean certain death for the man who has taken him under his wing. Finally, in 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' (1998), after losing all their money to London crime boss Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty) in a card game, 20-something friends Eddy (Nick Moran), Tom (Jason Flemyng), Soap (Dexter Fletcher) and Bacon (Jason Statham) decide to steal from their drug-dealing neighbour, Dog (Frank Harper). Using guns stolen from burglars in the employ of Harry, the quartet carry out their heist, leaving their money at Eddy's. However, as they set about disposing of the evidence, they are unaware that there is more to their firearms than they thought. |
