Description: |
Triple bill featuring three movies with a sports theme. In 'Mean Machine' (2001), Danny Meehan (Vinnie Jones) is a disgraced English football captain who, following some trouble with the law, gets landed with three years in Longmarsh prison. After winning the trust of his fellow inmates, the soccer star begins coaching their football team ready for a big match against the guards. However, as the kick-off approaches, the prison Governer (David Hemmings) orders Danny to throw the game - either that or find himself charged with the murder of fellow inmate Doc. In 'Coach Carter' (2005), Samuel L. Jackson plays Ken Carter, a tough, no-nonsense basketball coach who decides to take extreme measures to improve his team's poor academic performance. Although the team is undefeated, Carter locks them out of the gymnasium in an attempt to focus their minds on their studies, and to show them a world beyond drugs, gangs and even basketball. But Carter realises he has an uphill struggle when his controversial approach puts him into opposition with an irate community that wants the team back in the league. Finally, in 'Bad News Bears' (2005), Morris Buttermaker (Billy Bob Thornton) is a washed-up alcoholic former baseball player who finds himself hired to coach a team of 12-year-olds who are about to be thrown out of their Little League. As Buttermaker takes on the task of coaching the kids into a winning team, he finds his disreputable lifestyle difficult to give up, even as he focuses the team on beating their rivals, The Yankees, led by the arrogant Coach Bullock (Greg Kinnear). |
