Description: |
Three British comedies written by Richard Curtis. Curtis writes and directs 'The Boat That Rocked' (2009), an ensemble comedy set in the world of the pop music and pirate radio stations of 1960s Britain. Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as The Count, a larger-than-life American rock 'n' roll DJ who - along with fellow broadcasters Dave (Nick Frost), Simon (Chris O'Dowd), Midnight Mark (Tom Wisdom), Wee Small Hours Bob (Ralph Brown), Thick Kevin (Tom Brooke), On-The-Hour John (Will Adamsdale), Angus 'The Nut' Nutsford (Rhys Darby) and Gavin (Rhys Ifans) - takes the airwaves by storm via Radio Rock, a pirate radio station operating from a boat in the middle of the stormy North Sea in order to escape the confines of stuffy British law. Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh co-star. Curtis also directs the 2003 romcom 'Love Actually'. Eight stories involving the love lives of more than a dozen characters are brought together over one Christmas and climax on Christmas Eve; from the recent widower Daniel (Liam Neeson), the failing marriage of Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman), the aging rocker (Bill Nighy) who just wants to get paid (and laid if possible), through to the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) falling for a member of Number 10's staff (Martine McCutcheon). The film was another box-office success for the filmmakers and stars a host of British talent and celebrities. The romantic comedy 'Notting Hill' (1999) has become the biggest grossing British film of all time. Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) is the world's most famous movie star, whilst divorcee William Thacker (Grant) owns an ailing travel bookstore in his local neighbourhood of Notting Hill. One day Anna buys a book from William's shop and later collides messily with him on a street corner. She accompanies him home to clean herself up, and from there springs an unlikely romance. However, the path of true love is littered with obstacles, not least the media, the adoring fans and the differences in their lifestyles. |
