Description: |
Box set containing three classic movies starring Spencer Tracy. In 'Father of the Bride' (1950), Tracy plays Stanley T. Banks, a middle-class, middle-aged lawyer whose life is thrown into turmoil when his daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor) announces that she is to marry. His wife Ellie (Joan Bennett) wants give Kay the wedding they never had - very expensive - and Stanley realises that he not only has to pay for it but that he is losing the daughter he dotes on, and undergoing a mid-life crisis. 'Boys Town' (1938) is based on the true story of Father Flanagan, a Catholic priest who established a community in Omaha, Nebraska for troubled youths. The film stars Tracy, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, and Mickey Rooney as the young Whitey Marsh. The priest's challenge is to tame Whitey, the incorrigible kid brother of a jailed gangster. When Whitey first arrives at the orphanage, he turns it upside down with his street-tough antics. However, grim reality sets in when he loses a boxing match, sees his best pal injured in a car accident, and has extended contact with his brother's low-life criminal friends. In the end, Whitey falls in line with the program and is living proof of Father Flanagan's belief that there are no bad boys - just bad environments. Finally, 'The Old Man and The Sea' (1958) stars Tracy as Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman who has been nearly three months without a significant haul. Heaped with ridicule by other fisherman, he once again pushes off in his decrepit ketch, hoping that this trip will finally bring success. After a time at sea he hooks a powerful marlin that drags the man's tiny craft for a couple of days. Santiago engages in an epic battle with the monster, his hands nearly cut to ribbons as he's pushed to the limit of his dwindling strength. At rest during lulls in this war, he has dreams of his stronger and younger self, only to awaken to reality. At length, through guile, experience, and endurance, he lands the hefty marlin with a harpoon and secures him to the side of his boat. But a new danger arises, in the form of a school of hungry sharks that attacks the boat, attempting to seize his catch. |
