Synopsis: |
In 1972 there were 13000 people in asylum in Europe - 20 years on there are over a quarter of a million. Refugees are one of the major international political and humanitarian issues of the 1990s, yet European states have become increasingly restrictive in admitting and recognizing refugees. Covering both Western and Eastern Europe, this study provides a clear analysis of the historic and current factors affecting refugees and asylum seekers. The first part of this book outlines the history of refugee presence in Europe, the role of non-governmental and inter-governmental organizations, conventions, concepts, numbers and settlement issues. A focal-point of this book is two substantial sections covering refugees in Eastern and in Western Europe. Up-to-date to the end of 1991, the book also includes data on the UK's policies towards asylum seekers and personal accounts by refugees in the UK. |
