This report reproduces the oral evidence the Committee received from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Trade and Consumer Affairs, Gareth Thomas MP. Key topics in the evidence are: Parliamentary scrutiny of trade negotiating mandates in the House of Lords; the WTO Doha Round; food miles; the impacts of trade agreements on developing countries; the Common Agricultural Policy; trade in services; bilateral trade agreements; UK influence on European trade policy; trade defence instruments; and, trade relations with China. The Committee also announces an inquiry which will look beyond the Doha Round to the future of multilateral trade agreements. The Committee is concerned that there has been scant progress towards a conclusion of the Doha Round. It notes the increasing number of bilateral agreements that are being negotiated by the EU and the USA, and is concerned that these might be replacing the multilateral approach. |
