Synopsis: |
Paul Phillips spent five months unexpected special leave from many years of working behind a desk, trying to achieve at least one of his lifetime's ambitions - to get a basic knowledge of birdsong. He has always been interested in birds, has probably heard hundreds of dawn choruses but has no idea of which bird is singing which song, apart from a cuckoo, a duck and an owl perhaps. He has tried reading up about the subject but doesn't find bird book descriptions very helpful. He can't recognise a tweet from a chirrup or a caw from a squawk in real life. Though he has only five months he has all sorts of other plans too: to put back something into the voluntary wildlife sector by doing some physical work on reserves, to repair and make roadworthy a small collection of old motorcycles and plenty more besides. Though the tale is written in a generally light-hearted way, and is certainly not a comprehensive guide to teaching oneself birdsong, it is a genuine account of a real experience and does include ways found helpful. It also has on-going conservation issues and concerns.Whatever situation the reader is in regarding their own mastery of, or interest in, birdsong, or the desire to volunteer, there are situations which will be familiar to many and it may be a help or inspiration for others to do something similar too, even if it is just to try and take some leave! |
