Synopsis: Raymond Williams was one of the foremost political and cultural thinkers of the twentieth century and in this readable and accessible political biography, John Morgan focuses on the changing contexts of Williams's life and of his personal intellectual and political development. "Raymond Williams: A Political Life" charts the various stages in Williams's life: working class boyhood in inter-war South Wales, university at Cambridge, army service during the Second World War, the post-war Labour Government, distancing from both Stalinism and parliamentary labourism, the May Day Manifesto and New Left, the rediscovery of identity and the concept of Welsh Europeanism. Raymond Williams's published work and political affiliations are thoroughly re-examined by Morgan, and a special emphasis is placed on the significance of Wales and Welshness in Williams's thinking. This is the first volume in Welsh Academic Press' new Celtic Radicals series. This series will highlight the Celtic radicals who have led and inspired the Celtic peoples though the ages.
