Television adaptation of the Broadway production of James Lapine/Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical. The impressionist painter George Seurat, famous for his method of painting with minute dots of pure colour, is struggling both with his personal life and his masterpiece 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte'. His mistress and model (Bernadette Peters) is preparing to leave for a new life in America, but George (Mandy Patinkin) refuses to deal with this and pours all his energy into the painting. Alongside its excellent performances and involving score, Sondheim's musical has become famous for the way it brings Seurat's painting to life in a colourful stage tableau. |
