Description: |
Five films starring the late American screen actor Charlton Heston. 'The Greatest Show On Earth' (1952) is Cecil B. DeMille's star-studded spectacular about life under the Big Top. Circus owner Brad Braden (Heston) hires stunt daredevil The Great Sebastian (Cornel Wilde) as his star attraction, even though this demotes his trapeze artist girlfriend Holly (Betty Hutton) to second billing. The two performers try to outdo each other in the ring, whilst Sebastian tries to sweep her off her feet on terra ferma. Meanwhile, gangsters attempt to take a slice of the circus's action, and Buttons the Clown (James Stewart) proves to have a shadowy past. 'The Ten Commandments' (1956) is an epic retelling of the story of Moses (Heston), beginning with him as a baby in the bullrushes, and then moving through his time in the Egyptian court, the struggle with Pharoah (Yul Brynner) to obtain the freedom of his people, the parting of the Red Sea, the receipt of the Ten Commandments, the years of wandering in the desert, and the final arrival in the land of Canaan. In 'Will Penny' (1967), ageing cowboy Will Penny (Heston) takes a new job on an Oregon ranch and finds himself lodging for the winter in an old mountain cabin which has been temporarily occupied by Catherine (Joan Hackett), a married woman who is travelling to rejoin her husband. The pair soon finds themselves attracted to each other, but propriety prevents them from following their feelings. However, the situation changes when they are interrupted by the lunatic Preacher Quint (Donald Pleasence) and his gang of dangerous bandits. 'The Naked Jungle' (1954) stars Heston as Christopher Leiningen, the powerful, brooding owner of a plantation in the wild and treacherous South American jungle. Eleanor Parker co-stars as his charming American mail order bride, Joanna. But Christopher is wary of the beautiful and talented Joanna, and is suspicious about why she would leave America for the rigours of jungle life. Soon, however, they are both threatened by the advance of relentless killer ants which are making their way across the jungle - cutting a path of creeping horror 20 miles long and two miles wide. Finally, in 'Three Violent People' (1957), in the aftermath of the American Civil War, Colt Saunders (Heston) returns to his Texas ranch after having fought on the losing Confederate side, bringing with him his new wife Lorna (Anne Baxter). In his absence the ranch has been run by his Mexican foreman Innocencio (Gilbert Roland) and Colt's invalid brother Cinch (Tom Tryon). Cinch is reluctant to give up control of the ranch, and when Colt refuses to sell his share he goes behind his back to sell the property to a wealthy northerner. Colt soon discovers that there is a plot to kill him and seize control of the ranch, but even more devastating is the revelation that his pregnant wife Lorna used to be a prostitute. |
