Description: |
Eight films starring legendary male Hollywood actors. Interracial strife hits Atoka County, Alabama in Terence Young's thriller 'The Klansman' (1974) starring Lee Marvin. When local white woman Nancy Poteet (Linda Evans) is raped one night, apparently by a black man, the subsequent murder of a black teenager threatens to undermine the fragile balancing act of local County Sheriff 'Big Track' Bascomb (Marvin). Undermined by his Klan-supporting deputy (Cameron Mitchell) and local employer/Mayor, Hardy Riddle (David Huddlestone), Bascomb tries to keep the lid on the powder-keg of a potential race-war. Danny Kaye stars in the musical comedy 'The Inspector General' (1949) as an illiterate showman who gets mistaken for the Inspector General by the inhabitants of a small Russian village, leading to much confusion and skullduggery. In 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro' (1952), an adaptation of the story by Ernest Hemingway, Gregory Peck plays a renowned writer who is coming to the end of his life after being wounded whilst hunting in Africa. As he ponders his life, he tries to decide if there has been any meaning to his past. 'Embryo' (1976) is a sci-fi horror starring Rock Hudson. In three days a scientist (Hudson) grows a fully developed woman by injecting a special growth hormone into an embryo that he took from a female suicide victim. The woman (Barbara Carrera) falls madly in love with her creator but the experiment inevitably goes wrong and she turns to killing in order to survive. Steve McQueen stars in the comedy-caper - based on a real robbery - 'The Great St Louis Bank Robbery' (1959), which features the actual cops involved in preventing the robbery playing themselves. Four eccentric criminals plan the perfect crime - the broad daylight robbery of the Southwest Bank in St Louis. As the tension between the robbers rises, the job is botched, sending them all scrambling to save their skins. 'Vengeance Valley' (1950) is a classic western starring Burt Lancaster. All his life, Owen Daybright (Lancaster) has taken the rap for his friend Lee Strobie (Robert Walker)'s misdemeanours. Owen now works as foreman on Strobie's ranch and continues to take the blame for his friend's wrongs - even accepting paternity for Strobie's illegitimate child - in order to protect Strobie's wife, Jan (Joanne Dru). However, when Owen learns that Strobie plans to make off with his father's cattle, he finally decides that enough is enough. Errol Flynn stars in the historical adventure 'Santa Fe Trail' (1940). Jeb Stuart (Flynn) is one of the West Point military class of 1854, going on to become one of the leading cavalrymen of the American Civil War. Along the way he vies with his friend George Armstrong Custer (Ronald Reagan) for the romantic attentions of Kit Carson Holliday (Olivia de Havilland), and battles abolitionist John Brown (Raymond Massey). Ronald Reagan narrates the documentary 'Stilwell Road' (1945), chronicling the construction during World War II of the Stilwell Road, a 478-mile passage from India to Burma. |
