Description: |
Four classic musicals. Rita Hayworth stars in 'You Were Never Lovelier' (1942) as Maria Acuna, the daughter of hotelier Edwardo (Adolphe Menjou), who wishes her to marry poste haste. Maria believes that no man can match her high standards, so Edwardo invents a phoney Romeo, sending his daughter flowers and love notes. When penniless American dancer Robert Davis (Fred Astaire) delivers the latest of Edwardo's gifts, Maria believes him to be her mystery admirer. Hayworth also headlines in 'Cover Girl' (1944) as Rusty Parker, a nightclub dancer who rockets to fame and fortune after she is plucked from the chorus line and embarks on a career as a magazine cover girl. But will her newfound success risk alienating her from the man she truly loves? Co-starring Gene Kelly, Phil Silvers and Eve Arden, and featuring music and lyrics by Ira Gerswin and Jerome Kern. In 'Top Hat' (1935), Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire) receives an inexplicably haughty response from Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers) when he attempts to woo her - but that's because she has mistaken him for her friend's husband. Love's eventual triumph is charted through a number of classic song and dance routines, including 'Cheek to Cheek' and 'Top Hat, White Tie and Tails'. In 'Lover Come Back' (1961), Jerry Webster (Rock Hudson) and Carol Templeton (Doris Day) are advertising rivals who are forever competing for the same accounts. When Jerry steals a client from Carol, she determines to infiltrate his company and find out who his latest, top secret, VIP account owner is and woo him to her side. Little does Carol realise that the mystery scientist responsible for Jerry's new product is none other than Jerry himself. The film was remade as 'Down With Love' in 2003, with Renee Zellweger and Ewan Macgregor in the lead roles. |
