Description: |
Triple bill featuring three acclaimed drama movies. '8 Mile' (2002) stars Eminem in his film debut. Jimmy Smith (Eminem), aka Rabbit to his friends, has grown up on the wrong side of 8 Mile Road in the industrial city of Detroit. After being dumped by his girlfriend, Rabbit finds he has to move back with his mother (Kim Basinger) and her new boyfriend but gets on with neither of them. His only solace is rapping with the group of DJs and MCs who go under the name of Three One Third; but he is a white boy in a predominantly African-American music culture and there are many who do not like it. Convinced that hip hop is his only hope of getting out of the dead-end life he could end up living, Rabbit perseveres with rapping and is backed up by a new girlfriend (Brittany Murphy) and his friends. In 'Boyz n the Hood' (1991), Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a young black American, is sent to live with his father in South Central Los Angeles. Despite his earnest attempts to stay out of trouble, he and his friends are drawn into local gang violence. Eventually he finds that he must choose between a life surrounded by crime or his desire to leave the neighbourhood and get a college education. 'Higher Learning' (1995) is the tale of three students who each find a very different path through college: an athlete (Omar Epps) struggling to make the grade, a naive girl (Kristy Swanson) who discovers that men cannot always accept 'no' for an answer, and a shy and retiring guy (Michael Rapaport) who joins a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads in a desperate search for companionship. |
