Description:

Psychological drama starring Billy Bob Thornton as Manuel Jordan, a man who has spent the last two decades in prison after accidentally killing a 16-year-old convenience store clerk in a robbery gone terribly wrong. When - much to his surprise and even somewhat against his will - he is released, he drifts, alienated and hungry for atonement, back to the town where he committed the crime, where he becomes drawn into the life of an inner-city community centre run by the enigmatic pastor Miles Evans (Morgan Freeman). In his attempt to confront his past, he pursues a relationship with Adele Easley (Holly Hunter), the older sister of the boy he killed. When Adele's troubled teenage son starts on the cycle of mindless crime in which he was once embroiled, he sees his last opportunity for true redemption. Kirsten Dunst co-stars as Sofia Mellinger, a rich, privileged young woman with a drug problem whom Manuel befriends. The film premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.
