Description: |
Gritty crime thriller from director Bronwen Hughes, set in South Africa during the turbulent days of apartheid in the 1970s. Andre Stander (Thomas Jane) comes from a family of policeman and has risen quickly in the ranks. Popular and respected in the force, and recently married to his wife Bekkie (Deborah Unger), Stander soon comes to question the system he is sworn to uphold when he is involved in policing a riot in the townships of Soweto, and shoots an unarmed boy. Later, in a moment of madness, Stander robs a bank on his lunch hour. Assuaging his guilt by giving the money to a beggar, he is soon launching a daring series of bank robberies while wearing a variety of disguises, and then returning when on duty to investigate the cases. When he is finally caught and sent to prison, Stander forms a bond with two other inmates, Lee McCall (Dexter Fletcher) and Alan Heyl (David O'Hara). After a daring break-out, the Stander Gang go on an epic crime spree and become folk heroes, but as the police begin to close in fractures start appearing in the gang's composure. Andre Stander manages to escape to the United States under an assumed name, but finds that the memories of his actions during the riot continue to haunt him. |
