Description: |
Triple bill of action films. 'Wanted' (2008) is a slick, fast-paced thriller in which a mundane office worker is transformed into a lethal assassin. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy)'s life is one of dull routine. Trapped in a dead-end office job, unappreciated by his boss and cheated on by his girlfriend, Wes has accepted that he's never going to amount to much in life. But all that changes one day when he meets the enigmatic Fox (Angelina Jolie), a member of a secret society of assassins named The Fraternity who want to recruit Wes into their ranks. Dealing out death as ordained by fate itself, the society's leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman), tells Wes that the father he always thought was dead was actually one of their top assassins, and that following his recent murder, he must now avenge his father's death by releasing the dormant powers he has inherited. Although reticent at first, Wes quickly warms to both the task and the icily-sexy Fox, as he discovers his natural aptitude for the job at hand whilst despatching the bad guys with supremely energetic efficiency. 'Death Race' (2008) is a high-octane sci-fi adventure based on Paul Bartel's 1975 film 'Death Race 2000'. Jason Statham stars as former racing driver Jensen Ames, who is sent to Terminal Island prison after being framed for the murder of his wife. There, he is forced by the masochistic Warden Hennessey (Joan Allen) to compete in a lethal car race where the contestants must win or die. 'Doomsday' (2008) is a futuristic thriller from writer/director Neil Marshall ('Dog Soldiers', 'The Descent'). When the deadly 'reaper virus' hits Scotland, the decision is taken to literally wall-off the country from the rest of the British isles. This process of containment proves to be successful until, 27 years later, the virus resurfaces on the streets of London. A group of specialists led by no-nonsense copper, Captain Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra), is covertly dispatched into the still quarantined Scotland to seek out a cure. What they find is a nightmarish landscape torn apart by two rival factions - one led by the scientist Dr Marcus Kane (Malcolm McDowell), and the other by his son, Sol (Craig Conway) - and the one thing both factions agree on is that Sinclair and her team have to be eliminated... |
