Synopsis: |
Cv/VAR Volume 34 presents one hundred studies of Dartmoor by Philip James ROI, which take their inspiration from sites across the area, from Blackdown and Mary Tavy on the north side, to document the landmarks of Haytor, Bone Hill, Rippon Tor and Becky Falls that lend historic significance to the area."I made my first painting of Dartmoor in 1967, emerging from a bout of flu at Ponsworthy on New Year's Day with a small canvas to depict nearby Corndon Tor. Subsequent works took in the china clay tip of Shell Top on Lee Moor and the disused Wolfren Tin Mine at Hemerdon. My regular visits have revealed fresh subjects of interest: the swept storm light on Haytor seen from Manaton, the intimate vale of Sheepstor, or the majestic windswept trees at the gateway to the moors at Postbridge. Each return encourages a deepening engagement with the spare and beautiful landscape." Philip James April 2004 |
