Description: |
Brings together five lectures given by eminent educationalists in memory of the work of Lawrence Stenhouse, an influential figure in the field of education during the 1970s and early 1980s. The lectures focus on different themes in his work, reviewing them in the light of recent policy changes. |
Synopsis: |
Lawrence Stenhouse was one of the most influential figures in education in the 1970s and early 1980s. He was Director of the Humanities Curriculum Project; he founded the Centre for Applied Research in Education at the University of East Anglia; he was an early advocate of teacher research and a radical supporter of qualitative research, and in particular of case study methods. He wrote about curriculum development, the art of teaching and school-focused research in ways that were accessible, engaging and intellectually powerful. He died in 1982 but his ideas have a continuing relevance and his work is widely quoted in this country and abroad. After his death a Trust Fund was established to support an annual lecture in his memory. In 1988 the British Educational Research Association's Annual Conference became the regular setting for these lectures and the first five are collected here. They were given, in chronological order, by: John Elliot, Stephen Kemmis, Brian Simon, Tony Edwards and Donald McIntyre. |
