Synopsis: |
This survey, commissioned by the Food standards Agency (FSA), provides data on the dietary habits and nutritional status of the part of the UK population that has a low income. It is the most comprehensive survey of its kind in the UK and provides for the first time a wealth of information on the dietary habits and nutritional status in this population subgroup. It is a valuable supplement to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) programme that collects information on the dietary habits and nutritional status of the general UK population. The report summarises the key findings from the various chapters in the survey, covering: foods consumed; nutrient intake and status; physical measurement; physical activity; smoking; drinking; and, oral health. It also examines the relationship between dietary intake and factors associated with food choice, as well as highlighting areas of concern for the low-income population, which are in many respects similar to those already identified in the general population, although often to a greater degree. Also identified were higher levels of smoking, increased alcohol intake, and reduced physical activity. |
